Title : Packaging Innovation Manager

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Department: Innovation

Reports to: Director of Innovation

Salary: $80,000-100,000 + bonus

Date: 9/2024

Job Summary:

As the Packaging Innovation Manager, you will work alongside the Product Innovation and Development Manager to support the Director of Innovation in strategic and tactical matters related to packaging innovation and development. You will lead all aspects of packaging innovation, including developing and implementing various size formats, packaging types, and new delivery methods. This role focuses on expanding our packaging portfolio beyond our current Tetra Pak formats. You will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to drive innovative packaging solutions that align with our strategic goals. This is a remote role with up to 25% travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external partners.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage all packaging innovation projects from concept to implementation, including but not limited to different size formats in Tetra Pak, multipacks, Bag-in-box, sample sizes, alternative packaging, draft options, etc.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as Operations, Quality, Compliance, Sales, Marketing, and Insights, as well as co-packers and suppliers, to develop and implement new packaging solutions.
  • Evaluate and implement solutions for delivering products in innovative delivery formats (i.e., frozen occasions).
  • Oversee the packaging development process, including material selection, design, testing, and validation, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Collaborate with the Sustainability Team on sustainability initiatives related to packaging, exploring and implementing eco-friendly packaging solutions to reduce the company's environmental impact.
  • Manage packaging cost optimization projects, balancing cost-efficiency with quality and innovation.
  • Work with Insights to monitor and manage packaging performance in-market, gathering feedback and making continuous improvements to enhance product quality and consumer experience.
  • Work closely with the Product Innovation and Development Manager to ensure seamless integration of packaging and product innovations, aligning on timelines, goals, and objectives.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements to ensure the company remains at the forefront of packaging innovation.
  • Travel to co-packers for new product signoffs, review specifications, and ensure successful handoff to the Operations/QAQC Team.
  • Manage relationships with suppliers and co-packers and assist with new co-packer onboarding for packaging innovation projects.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of packaging development.
  • Provide regular updates to stakeholders and leadership on packaging innovation progress, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Monitor and address quality or compliance issues during packaging development and scale-up phases, providing scientific technical support and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with local, state, and federal liquor control regulations.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior team members and new hires, sharing knowledge to build team capabilities and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Innovation.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Extensive experience in packaging innovation within the food and beverage industry, with a strong understanding of packaging materials, processes, and technologies.
  • Established network of co-packers and suppliers, with proven experience managing co-packer relationships and driving packaging projects from concept to completion.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all departments of the organization, and external partners, to ensure that products meet the highest quality standards and are delivered on time.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to develop innovative packaging solutions.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to packaging and food safety.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Motivated to make a difference and contribute to the company's growth and success.

Education/Experience:
  • Education:Bachelor's degree in Packaging Science, Engineering, Food Science, or a related discipline is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Packaging Development Expertise: A minimum of 5 years of experience in packaging innovation, preferably in the food and beverage industry. Experience with various packaging formats, including Tetra Pak, aluminum cans, bag in box, cartons, and draft options.
  • Sustainability Expertise: Familiarity with sustainability practices and sustainable packaging solutions is a plus.
  • Quality Assurance and Quality Control Experience: Candidates should have a strong background in quality assurance and quality control processes. A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience is often required.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements and standards applicable to the industry, such as ISO, FDA regulations, GMP, or other industry-specific certifications, is highly beneficial.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
